Manchaiah tapped Jerger Future Leader of Audiology
The American Academy of Audiology has named Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s Vinaya Manchaiah, associate professor and director of audiology, to the 2016 class of Jerger Future Leaders of Audiology. Manchaiah is one of only a dozen individuals selected nationally for the honor.
“Dr. Vinaya Manchaiah serves as the Jo Mayo Endowed Professor in the Department of Speech and Hearing Science,” said Monica Harn, Diane H. Shaver Professor in Speech and Hearing Sciences and chair of the university’s Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences. “He exemplifies the role of teacher, researcher, and collaborator. His contributions have put the program of audiology at Â鶹ÊÓƵ in the national and global spotlight.”
He is the Jo Mayo Endowed Professor and holds a Ph.D. in disability research from Linkoping University, Sweden, an executive M.B.A. from Swansea University, United Kingdom, the Doctor of Audiology from Nova Southeastern University, M.S. in Audiology from the University of Southampton, and a Bachelor’s of Science in Speech and Hearing from the University of Mysore, India.
In addition to his prolific research and teaching, Manchaiah is co-founder and director for strategic planning for the non-profit non-governmental organization Audiology India, for which he served as president from 2011 to 2015. The organization seeks to foster ear and hearing health care in India.
Manchaih is invited to the American Academy of Audiology’s 5th biennial Jerger Future Leaders of Audiology Conference. Recognizing the need to develop the future leaders of the profession of Audiology, Academy leadership launched the Future Leaders of Audiology Conference in 2008 and repeated the conference in 2010, 2012 and 2014. The conference was renamed to honor the leadership of the one of the Academy’s founders and its first president, Dr. James F. Jerger in 2012. The 2016 JFLAC will take place at the Academy headquarters in Reston, Va., September 11-13, 2016.
