Center for History and Culture establishes Fellowships, seeks candidates

Center logoThe Center for History and Culture of Southeast Texas and the Upper Gulf Coast at Â鶹ÊÓƵ invites applications for two one-year fellowship positions. The positions are open to both Â鶹ÊÓƵ and non-Lamar candidates. The one-year fellowships will represent the highest honor of distinction and bring a $5,000 grant.

The interdisciplinary, multi-cultural center promotes the creation, preservation and transmission of knowledge—broadly conceived—about the region of Southeast Texas and the Upper Gulf Coast, said Mary Scheer, chair of the Â鶹ÊÓƵ Department of History and director of the Center.

“The Center strives to be the historical and cultural hub that tells the story of the area through public engagement,” said Scheer, who holds a Ph.D. from Texas Christian University. “The Center will produce high quality publications, creative exhibits and cultural performances, sponsor lectures and symposia, develop innovative curriculum, and support faculty and students in research focused on topics of regional interest.”

The two Center Fellows will work with Scheer to contribute to programming. Fellows will receive a grant to support expenses related to their production of work that addresses important problems and/or enhances the historical/cultural understanding of the region in areas such as energy, history, art, music, literature, environment, society, government and more. They will present their work to the campus and community in lecture, exhibition or performance.
