When the word “legacy” was mentioned, KV�鶹��Ƶ Station Manager Byron Balentine had to pause. It was a word he had not thought of until that moment. As he stared off thinking about that word, he prepared to talk about it, because after 45 years of service with KV�鶹��Ƶ radio at �鶹��Ƶ, Balentine will be signing off for the final time and leaving his legacy imprinted on the university at the end of 2022.

For a decade, the �鶹��Ƶ Office of Undergraduate Research has championed undergraduate research and creative activities efforts at �鶹��Ƶ. As the program moves into the start of a new decade, Dr. Cristian Bahrim, director of the Office of Undergraduate Research, reflects on the success of the program for the 2022 year.

The Texas Association of School Administrators has named the 2023 recipients of its Johnny L. Veselka Scholarship, which recognizes the leadership of Dr. Johnny L. Veselka, who dedicated nearly 44 years of service to the association, including 32 years as TASA’s executive director.

Ashley Wilbourn '13, along with several other educators in the Beaumont Independent School District, has been honored with the Above and Beyond Award, given to educators within the district for their dedication to student success.

In late November, three �鶹��Ƶ communication students –– Alexis Miller, Katie Bourgeois and Willie Carrierre –– attended the 38th International Radio and Television Society Foundation Multicultural Career Workshop in New York, New York.

For senior public relations major and upcoming graduate Mattie Hamilton, it all started as a standard research paper for an eight-week online class during the fall 2021 semester. Following a conversation with Professor Andre Favors in the Department of Communication & Media, Hamilton continued her research.

The Lamar Department of Art and Design invites you to join them for “Sanity Not Found,” the fall 2022 senior thesis show in which art students fulfill the requirements for their degree by presenting their thesis projects. “Sanity Not Found” will be in exhibition Dec. 2-10 at the Dishman Art Museum.

�鶹��Ƶ choirs of the Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music will present one of the most beloved choral works, Handel’s Messiah, on Friday, Dec. 2 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Anthony’s Cathedral Basilica.

For the second time, Cardinal Lights, a spectacular holiday light display, has returned to the �鶹��Ƶ campus for the Southeast Texas community to enjoy. For the entire month of December, families are invited to take a slow drive through campus to enjoy the lights and other holiday decorations.

The VITA program is managed by �鶹��Ƶ's Division of Diversity, Inclusion and Community Relations and includes nearly a dozen agencies or businesses that partner together to provide free tax preparation for qualified income residents earning up to$59,000.

�鶹��Ƶ’s second band concert of the 2022-2023 academic year, featuring the Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band, is set for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22, in the Julie Rogers Theatre in downtown Beaumont.

While most may view students at �鶹��Ƶ as future educators, engineers, scientists, politicians and beyond, Caleb Buse looks around and sees one thing –– future entrepreneurs. Now, the Silsbee native is the brainchild, and president, behind the new �鶹��Ƶ student organization Future Entrepreneurs Organization, chartered in early November.

For the third year in a row, �鶹��Ƶ student organization AIChE, or American Institute of Chemical Engineering, has been named Outstanding Student Chapter at the national AIChE Annual Student Conference.

After taking part in hearing screenings during the Texas Special Olympics, Lindsey Sanford, Valerie Valdez, Desiree Cooper, Kelsey Spencer, and Sierra Hunnicutt, doctoral audiology students in the Department of Speech & Hearing Sciences, have been invited to volunteer at the Special Olympics in Berlin, Germany in June of 2023.

The Department of Theatre and Dance will present their “Fall & Recovery” dance concert on Nov. 18, at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 19 with two show times at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. All performances will be held in the University Theatre located on the campus of �鶹��Ƶ.  

Three �鶹��Ƶ teams participated in the Texas A&M University School of Law Regional Moot Court Tournament on Nov. 4-5.

The Office of Undergraduate Research is set to host its 9th annual Humanities, Arts, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Education and Business — or HASBSEB — Conference, featuring keynote speaker professor Dr. Juan Llopis, professor of business organization and director of Institutional Relations and Projects at the University of Alicante. The conference will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Nov. 19.

A team of researchers at �鶹��Ƶ have been awarded a $45, 000 grant to bolster the team’s outreach initiative on MIND –– mental health intervention, networking and diversion.

With a single piece of paper and a runway, three �鶹��Ƶ engineering students –– Matthew Anderson, Kenneth Edwards and Mauricio Franco –– have designed the newest STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) exhibit at the Beaumont Children’s Museum.

According to theatre professor Alan Brincks, the “ghost light” tradition is something that is familiar to any theatre worker, but the origin of the tradition is not entirely known.

This semester the College of Business Cardinal Communities class has taken on new initiatives to better help incoming freshman be set up for success. These classes, which are requirements for incoming freshman to complete via the university’s Passport Program, are a resource that has been available to students since 2017. In 2020, the College of Business saw great success in improving retention rates by making the class mandatory to incoming business freshman. This practice has since been adopted university wide. The College of Business has continued to look for ways to improve the course and in 2022 has decided to incorporate a new program to continue to mold successful and prepared student s. One such initiative includes teaching Franklin Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective College Students.
