Music Education: TExES

All music certification students must pass two Texas Examinations of Educator Standards (TExES): one in all-level pedagogy and professional responsibility (PPR) and one in the content area, which is all-level music, Early Childhood (EC)-12.

PPR Examination

The PPR examination has questions that are directly related to the content of PEDG 3310 and PEDG 3320.

All-Level Music Examination

The all-level music examination contains items about information presented in all music courses, including:

  • Theory
  • Music history
  • Music literature (especially world music and 20th century music)
  • Conducting
  • Choral and instrumental music methods courses
  • Elementary music courses, ensembles, and applied lessons

There are ear training examples and items requiring error detection. Some items require identification of composer and style period.

Exam Includes All Areas of Specialization

The examinations cover information about all areas and all levels of music education. Students must be familiar with not only their own areas of specialization, but also all others.

Review Manuals and Test Review

There are commercial review manuals available for both the PPR and the EC-12 Music TExES. The (TMEA) website and the State Board of Educator Certification (SBEC) website have reviews for the music content area examination that are free of charge. On the TMEA website, select the Divisions tab, then select the College division to find the link to the test review.
